NICKI TRENCH
Brighten up drab shelves with this lovely edging from
Homemaker’s Crochet Queen
I
sat down to watch an
interview with John
Travolta, who I've loved
since
Saturday Night Fever
,
and I suddenly realised that
nothing is forever. My love
had gone. Was it his puffy
face and arched brows or the
sound of his voice? He was
once seriously sexy, and now
frozen and waxy. He was
no longer ‘my’ John. The
perfect John.
This got me thinking
about the transient things
that have been and gone
in my life, including things
around my home and my
crochet. With homewares,
you don’t always realise it’s
‘out’ until you see something
similar in a retro shop.
propagate it to create a spider
plant jungle. You tie your
shoelaces with macramé knots
and have glass storage jars with
handwritten white ‘yogi tea’
and ‘green lentils’ labels. I guess
my home is my own version
of John’s botoxed forehead.
Perhaps he belongs in another
era, but no one’s as cool as
he is. The great thing about
creative people who like to
make things is that they’re not
led by the limited styles on the
high street. We like to rummage
for the unusual. I still love to
follow current fashions, but you
can only be who you are, and
your home will represent that.
This month I’m working with
cottons because it’s warm, so
I’m featuring my shelf edging
from
Crochet Basics
. I’m going
to make another one of these
in greys and yellows though –
just to show I can keep up with
trends too.

Then it’s too late for you to do
anything and you realise your
home, that you always thought
trendy, actually stopped being
stylish years ago.
My friends have a beautiful
East London warehouse flat.
It’s cool, sophisticated with
the latest designer textiles,
prints and kitchenware, and
of course, everything is grey
and lime-yellow. I recently
crocheted them a grey cafetiere
cosy with lime tassels – they’re
not adverse to some crochet
as it’s “retro, darling”. I always
leave theirs promising myself to
emulate their cool home, but
all I achieve is a mish-mash of
stuff, ranging from practical
to ridiculous.
You truly know your home
is ‘bohemian’ if you believe
the only thing that works with
pattern is another pattern. You
own cheese plants, rubber
plants and each time your
spider plant sprouts, you
